Personal Column – May 2014

VOICE for hearing impaired childrenMay is Speech and Hearing Month; a month we celebrate that our deaf son can hear. Cade, our middle son, was born profoundly deaf. He received cochlear implants at 17 months. Because of these implants and years of therapy, Cade hears and speaks remarkably well. He attends our neighbourhood school and is an A student, plays piano, is a talented hockey player and a budding wakeboarder (end bragging now….). VOICE for hearing impaired children is the organization that has made it possible for him to live the FULL and LOUD life he is now enjoying.

On April 22nd, he was given the opportunity to go to Disney for the day with the Sunshine Foundation. 80 kids with varying disabilities along with over 100 volunteers were sponsored to attend this #BrantfordDreamLift to Disney. They left the airport @6am and returned back @12am, exhausted but ecstatic!  I am amazed with this organization and the generous sponsors who made possible this unforgettable day. The adventure was such a blessing for Cade; a way to honour and reward him for all that he endures because of his disability. Thanks to so many people, Cade has been given a VOICE for life, a full and rewarding life.
