Unforgettable April Events in the Waterloo Region

April Fools if you thought the month would start off feeling like spring, but the warmer weather is on its way and so are a lot of interesting things to do in the Kitchener-Waterloo area this month. April begins on Easter weekend. You will likely find a Bunny related activity near you or checkout McDougall Cottage in Cambridge for some egg dyeing, rolling and hunting fun. Many churches will be presenting special Easter services including a sunrise service at the historic Freeport United Brethren Church in Doon Heritage Village. Easter brunch is a wonderful family tradition and some restaurants will be offering special menus including the popular selection at Brentwood Livery partner Bingemans.
It’s gonna get green real soon and gardening seminars abound. The Region of Waterloo hosts talks on Water Wise gardening April 7 at the Cambridge Centre for the Arts, No Maintenance Perennials April 15 at St. Jacobs Country Gardens and Love Your Lawn April 18 at the Kitchener Public Library Theatre. There is a hands on workshop on pruning trees and shrubs at the Waterloo Region Museum on April 7 and instruction from the Horticultural Society on Gardening for Wildlife April 10 at the Kitchener Public Library. A Stepping Into Spring symposium takes place at Avenue Road Baptist Church in Cambridge on April 14 and, of course, the local nurseries and greenhouses will be bustling.

Eat up. If you’re looking to satisfy that sweet tooth check out the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival on April 7. Celebrate all things maple and, perhaps, enter a team in the pancake flipping relay. If you fancy something more cerebral a research professor discovers the Chemistry and Physics of Chocolate at the Waterloo Public Library April 18. Feed your soul at the 43rd Waterloo Region Interfaith Community Breakfast April 25. If you prefer upscale, Bingemans is hosting the 26th Annual Chefs’ Gourmet Dinner April 26 in support of Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Maybe a cup of tea is more your cup of tea. If so, the Waterloo Central Railway is offering a high tea and train experience on April 12. As always, the region has countless interesting eateries, shops and markets for you to explore.

There are a plethora of arts and entertainment options this month. In the world of live theatre the Kitchener Waterloo Little Theatre presents The Merchant of Venice and the Cambridge Community Players the play Skin Flick. Both runs begin April 14. Drayton Entertainment shows Hairspray at the Hamilton Theatre until April 8 and The Drowsy Chaperone at St. Jacobs Country Playhouse until April 15. Magic takes the stage at the Tannery Event Centre in Kitchener with David Storm on April 12 and at Cedar Creek Community Church in Cambridge April 13 with Brant and Sarah’s Comedy Magic Show. If you like your live entertainment a little more active The Harlem Globetrotters grace the Kitchener Auditorium April 19. The Centre in the Square has an eclectic schedule this month featuring a lecture by Dr. Jane Goodall April 25, a Classic Albums Live tribute to Rush 2112 on April 19, opera April 6 and a number of events and presentations by the K-W Symphony Orchestra. The K-W Symphony teams with a storyteller to present The Most Beautiful Bird at the Woolwich Memorial Centre on April 21.

Get up close and personal with your art with a Dreamcatcher Workshop at the Cambridge Centre for the Arts on April 5, a family art afternoon at the Idea Exchange in Cambridge April 8 or an opportunity to Make Your Own Monogram Doormat at the Kitchener Farmers’ Market on April 12. Get creative April 8 at the Homer Watson Gallery at their free annual community appreciation day with art activities, tours and treats. Explore the KW Weavers and Spinners Show and Sale at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex April 13-15 and for the ultimate papercrafting destination ScrapFest at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium April 13-14. The New Hamburg Mennonite Relief Sale Promotion Dinner takes place at Bingemans April 30.

Get active for a good cause with Dorothy’s Best Bowling Tournament April 7 in Kitchener in support of AIDS and Cancer charities, Hockey for Heart April 14-15 in Waterloo or Let’s Body Check Cancer April 13-15 in Cambridge. Get your groove on with public roller skating April 14 at the Grand River Arena in support of a local low contact roller derby team.

Just get active with the 20th Annual Waterloo Marathon and Ed Whitlock Half Marathon on April 29. This Boston Marathon qualifier starts and ends at Bechtel Park in Waterloo.

Celebrate the wonders of our world on Earth Day April 22. The City of Waterloo is celebrating by asking you to organize a local park litter clean up this month. Register and the city will help with tips, info and free supplies. The Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory is offering guided walking tours April 22 and Rare ECO Centre and chance to dig right in and help with the planting of trees and shrubs at a newly restored habitat. Local Scouts are putting together an E-Waste Collection and Bottle Drive in Waterloo April 21-22.
