what to do in March in the Waterloo RegionThe first touch of spring, when thoughts turn to renewal, fresh greenery, green beer and how to keep those kids busy on the March break. There are activities to help with all that and more in the Kitchener-Waterloo area this month.

Pay tribute to the changing seasons. Warm up the first evening of the month with a Kitchen Ceilidh at McDougall Cottage in Cambridge or celebrate the chill with a family overnight camping experience at YMCA Camp Ki-Wa-Y in Wellesley on March 2. Schneider Haus in Kitchener will be boiling up maple sap and making treats March 3-4. If you’re sweet on maple syrup check out a local sugar bush tour like the horse drawn carriage runs from the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market every Saturday.

As always, there are many chances to lend a helping hand this month. Help raise some funds for our furry friends at the K-W Humane Society where they have stretched National Cupcake day to a week and have goodies for sale till March 2. Support Big Brothers Big Sisters with Bowl For Kid’s Sake at Bingemans from March 3-10. On March 6 THEMUSEUM hosts its fifth annual Jazz Night Fundraiser in support of Bridges of Belonging and March 10 the University of Waterloo presents a charity fashion show. Toast the arrival of spring on March 22 at the Tannery Event Centre in Kitchener with the Winter Warmer scotch tasting and silent auction in support of the Alzheimer Society of Waterloo Wellington.

While warming weather causes some to turn a wary eye to the dormant lawnmower many can’t wait to get back in the garden. Seedy Saturday, March 3 at the Rare Eco Centre in Cambridge, offers green thumbers a chance to swap and exchange seeds and on the same day the Grand River Conservation Authority presents a one day workshop on managing trees on your property. The Kitchener Horticultural Society explores the intersection of gardening art and spirit at the Public Library central branch on March 13. The Wilmot Horticultural Society celebrates their 50th anniversary with a Garden Explosion of talks, demonstrations and vendors at the Wilmot Recreation Centre on the 17th. One of the area’s most popular home shows takes place March 23-25 with more than 150 exhibitors and an estimated 15,000 visitors to the KW Home and Garden Show at the Auditorium. Garden talks are taking place all month at a myriad of local venues such as Gardening and Beyond: Backyard Hens at the Preston Idea Exchange on March 26. Happy growing.

Art, culture and interesting presentations. There is always a wealth of it in the region. The Centre for International Governance Innovation in Waterloo explores children’s rights in a global context with a full day of speakers on March 2. The centre also hosts Celebrating Women of Influence in Tech on International Women’s Day March 8. Cambridge Arts Theatre presents Ruth: A Musical Drama to commend International Women’s Day and on that day the Kitchener Public Library central branch will host a variety of speakers focusing on practical ways we can all work towards gender equality with Change the Ratio. Local libraries, as always, are loaded with interesting programs such as Ancestry.ca for Beginners March 6 or Free Software for Creatives March 7 at the Idea Exchange in Cambridge. Crime writer Ian Hamilton appears at the Waterloo Public Library March 7.

The Oscars are the theme at Princess Twin Cinemas March 4 with contests, champagne, popcorn and other goodies to celebrate Hollywood’s big night. Bring a donation for the Food Bank. Live theatre at Drayton Entertainment kicks off the new year with the premiers of Hairspray at the Hamilton Theatre in Cambridge March 17 and The Drowsy Chaperone at St. Jacobs Country Playhouse on March 28. Centre in the Square presents a selection of classical and pop acts this month and a bit of the offbeat with Letterkenny Live on March 19. Hedley appears at the Aud on March 10. Our area farmers’ markets are always a treat. This month, the Kitchener Market will host Artilicious on March 8. The event, in support of the Kidney Foundation of Canada, offers a chance to sample local food, brews, wines and peruse the wares of local artisans at one locale. The Market also presents a free St. Patrick’s Day party March 17 with Irish dance, crafts and cooking. Check out your local establishments for the more mature version of celebrating the Irish Green.

March Break splits the month and there are lots of activities to keep little hands and minds  busy. If you are looking for creative the KW Art Gallery and the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery are offering day camps and the artist in residence will be hosting daily activities at Schneider Haus. Check out the YMCA and other local groups for more day camps. You can eat a bug with Bugfeast at the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory all week, focus on dogs March 10 or wild birds March 11 at Schneider Haus or talk turtles at Rare on March 13.  The Waterloo Region Museum and area libraries have a host of daily activities during the week. Schneider Haus challenges you to survive like a pioneer on March 17-18 and Cookies and Kids Theatre closes the week with a presentation of Robin Hood on March 18.

For the sporty, the Kitchener Rangers have been lighting it up and and are gearing up for the playoffs. They host regional rivals the Guelph Storm March 16 at the Aud. The Titans are in full swing and WWE Live slams into the Kitchener Auditorium March 24. The province comes to Cambridge as the Hespeler Arena welcomes the OFSAA Girls Hockey Championship from March 21-23.

As we move to spring, celebrate the Vernal Equinox with a shinrin-yoku walk through the Huron Natural Area led by a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. This March 20 program is free but requires registration and is restricted to adults. Round out the month with Yoga in the Gallery at Homer Watson House March 28 and Seniors Day at Schneider Haus March 29. Admission to Spring Folklore is free to those 55+ with a donation to the food bank. Celebrate Eastertide traditions as we carry on to Good Friday to end the month.
